 John Ambrose Barrett

Son of Joseph and Louisa Barrett of Romford Road , Upton Park, Essex; husband of Evelyn Marion Barrett of 139,Newmarket Road, Norwich.

Second Lieutenant.  16th Battalion. The Rifle Brigade. 117th Brigade.39th Division.

Died on Tuesday 31 July 1917.  Age 36.

On the 31/7/1917 as part of the start of the Battle of Passchendaele, at 3.50 a.m the 16th Rifle Brigade were part of an attack against three pillboxes at Regina Cross, it was in this action that Barrett fell.  He now lies in New Irish Farm Cemetery. Ypres. Belgium.  Grave XV11.E.16.

This a cemetery enlarged after the war containing the graves of 4715 Commonwealth servicemen, 3267 are unidentified.

 There is also another J.A. Barrett listed as follows,

Barrett; John Aislabie.

Son of the late G.Barrett and Florence M.Stokes (formerly Barrett) of 3 Brunswick Court, Hove, Sussex.

Second Lieutenant.13th Bn. Essex Regiment.(West Ham). 33rd Division.

Died on Saturday 28th April 1917.  Age 22.

The 13th Essex took part in the Battle of Arras, in which 150,000 Commonwealth troops fell.  Barrett has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial in the Faubourg-d’Amiens Cemetery.  The memorial contains the names of almost 35000 soldiers who have no grave.  Barrett is listed on bay 7.
