22 September - Braintree Vets  22    Extra A  41

Another first on Saturday, as the journey to Braintree included a road than ran straight through the middle of a cricket match. As the Old boys were short of a second row it was discussed whether they should kidnap the Long on fielder as he looked quite big. However they eventually settled on moving Dominici from full back, he wasn’t overly impressed!!

Clapton arrived (late) with not only a full team this week but also a sub…hooray

Extra A regulars Sprolly (John Sprules), Guv’nor (John Knights) and Barks (Dave Barker) all made there first starts of the season. The Old boys also welcomed Pikey (Richard Jones), Hop along (Rob Shields) and Rob Eales into the team.

Clapton were always in control of this game and took an early lead when Damo finished off after some expansive free flowing rugby. This was the first of 3 jug buying tries for the fat, mole free winger. Potato also crossed in the first half while Braintree managed a solitary try.

Clapton’s expansive game wasn’t to every players taste as Barks yelled his annoyance at not running straight and creating a platform for the forwards to work from. Moments later Barks received the ball and created a platform by kicking the ball into the corner? (Ok it was a good kick)

The hosts made several changes at half time which made them a lot more competitive in the second half. This was evident as they managed a further 3 tries. Two from a fly half who enjoyed a dummy or two!!

No to be outclassed the Club also scored 3 second half tries. Firstly Damo completed his hat trick then Man of the match Dominici collected a “high hanging” drop out and accelerated in true first gear only fashion to score. The final try came from Barks who powered his way over in the corner and received a black eye for his troubles (tee hee)

Overall an enjoyable match against a true Old boys team who always make us very welcome. The after match port was very enjoyable.

The MOM badge went to Dominici, bloodied, bruised and Bloody brilliant

Next week the Old Gits have there first home game of the year! Against Black Horse in the merit table

Question of the day: Where is Paul Thurlow?

29 September  Extra A 22   Black Horse 7

A rather snazzy looking Extra A took to the field for this Merit Table match on Saturday. The trend setters were sporting some fine looking baggy knee length shorts that had been sponsored by Chris "Pit Bull" Barrett and Owen Loyne. Loyne coincidently was making his first outing of the season and had also dragged up Jeremy Rose after a phone call in the changing room

The old boys began the match short of one player having borrowed one from there opposition while Northern having to ref as DW had cancelled an hour earlier as he had the shits!!

Some early pressure from the visitors was countered by fine defending with Schmakeral (Richard Maskell) and Piggy not giving an inch in the midfield. (Potato less so). Clapton opened the scoring as pressure from the fat boys led to a pass from the scrum half to nobody in particular. Smackeral who was taking time out from waving at his son on the touchline fell on the loose ball to claim the try. Piggy increased the lead moments later and should have had a brace but dropped the ball as he was going over the line. His excuse, "I get nervous because Owens playing!!" Old Git (Buck) had now arrived which meant a full team and Clapton never looked back...or should I say Buck....tee hee

Black Horse scored early in the second half when a neat chip through was collected by the full back who proceeded to run the 95 yards to score as no one from the home team could be asked to chase him. Piggy then added his second before the moment of the match. Clapton secured ball from a line out on the 10 yard line, did you say 10 yard line, yes I did the 10 YARD LINE. Loyne threw out a diving pass to Potato who proceeded to nail a drop goal from the 10 yard line.... Black Horse looked on in disbelief as it sailed through the posts from the 10 yard line. This ended the scoring as both team tired and started to take chunks out of each other.

The MOM badge went to the returning Jeremy Rose who got on the nerves of the opposition through out the match and then got on the nerves of the home team when the game had finished.

Next week the Old boys are scheduled to play Datchworth 3's in the merit table but as England KO at 2pm we will probably give it a miss and watch the game at the club.

Note to Lobbo: We have a sweep in place as to how many texts you received on Saturday and didn't respond to. Can you let me know please?.
